Nutrition Sector Overview
WEFOD implements comprehensive nutrition interventions across South Sudan to address acute malnutrition and improve the nutritional status of vulnerable populations, particularly children under 5 years and pregnant and lactating women (PLWs).
Key activities
- Provide routine screening for children under 5 and PLWs for signs of acute malnutrition in communities and health facilities
- Refer cases of Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) without complications to well-equipped TSFP and OTP for proper management
- SAM cases with medical complications referred to stabilization centres for further management
- Enrol children 6 to 59 months and PLWs into nutrition programmes and administer treatment according to national protocols
- Conduct home visits and provide support for children who have defaulted or been discharged from the nutrition programme
- Establish and equip OTPs/TSFPs and SCs with nutritional equipment, supplies and consumable commodities
- Provide routine Health and Nutrition education sessions to caretakers at Nutrition centres
- Provide support to OTP nutritionists for treating SAM and MAM cases at facilities
- Train and equip nutrition staff and CHD staff on CMAM Protocol
- Identify and train community nutrition volunteers (CNVs) on early detection and referral
- Identify, train and establish mother-to-mother support groups on key MIYCN messages
- Sensitize child-bearing, pregnant and lactating mothers on MIYCN through trained support groups and CNVs
- Improve knowledge on MIYCN among vulnerable populations through community outreach activities
- Conduct sensitization meetings on MIYCN, hygiene and sanitation, and routine immunization with local leaders according to Boma Health Initiative guide
